What is Coaching?

Coaching is a partnership between the coach and the client. ADHD/EF coaching is a structured intervention designed to assist individuals with executive functioning challenges. Coaching combines the knowledge of ADHD and its neurobiology with life coaching skills to assist clients in goal-setting, discovering strengths, developing social skills, and acknowledging limitations to create strategies to reach autonomy in their daily lives.

Studies indicate that coaching supports improved ADHD symptoms and executive functioning (Ahmann, 2017). There is empirical evidence that proves why folks with ADHD who underwent EF coaching reported increased overall well-being and feeling positive (Kubik, 2009). Did you know that specific areas in the brain are responsible for controlling attention and focus?

These critical areas in the brain are called ‘executive functions’ that impact our success, including — time management, organization skills, managing emotions, goal-setting, problem-solving, self-monitoring, working memory, attention skills, planning and executing tasks, social skills, and more.

Individuals with ADHD and executive functioning challenges often have difficulty managing tasks and balancing priorities at school, the workplace, or life in general.

The good news, however, is that it is possible to rewire those networks in the brain for a positive outcome.

How exactly does a coach help?

A coach assists in setting and achieving goals, improving personal organization, and developing effective strategies for managing symptoms of ADHD. Coaches work collaboratively with clients to identify areas of challenge, create action plans, and provide ongoing support and accountability to help clients reach their full potential. Through a combination of education, skill-building, and motivation, ADHD coaching aims to empower individuals with ADHD to navigate daily tasks more efficiently, enhance productivity, and cultivate a greater sense of self-awareness and self-confidence.

When does ADHD coaching not work?

Coaching may not be effective when the individual is not willing to participate actively in the process, lacks commitment to change, or has unrealistic expectations about the outcomes. In addition, if there is a poor fit between the coach and the client or if the client is not open to feedback or personal reflection, coaching may not yield the desired results.

How do I know if coaching is working?

Notice the subtle and big changes within your child. Are they discussing coaching sessions with you? Do they mention how confident they feel after each session? These gradual shifts in self-awareness can be powerful indicators of progress. On a more substantial level, you might observe improvements in academic performance, such as receiving better grades at school. Pay attention to both the small, everyday victories and the larger, more tangible milestones as your child continues to grow through coaching sessions.

What is the minimum commitment to see the results from coaching?

There is no minimum time frame. Every individual is different, has different needs, and works at a different pace. Some take as long as four years, and some take as little as three months. Effective results take time.

Why does coaching take place without the interference of a parent?

Coaching takes place without a parent's interference, and the issues discussed during coaching sessions are to be kept confidential between the individual and the coach. Coaching is, therefore, an opportunity for growth and change in the young person and the parent. The important fundamental of coaching is accountability. Accountability from the young person ensures that he or she will take responsibility and follow through with the plan and action items designed and agreed upon by the coach and the individual during the coaching process.

As a parent, what do I need to know before my child begins ADHD coaching?

Before your child begins ADHD coaching, here are some important things for you to know:

  1. Understanding ADHD: Familiarize yourself with the basics of ADHD, including symptoms, common challenges, and how it can impact your child's daily life.

  2. Goals and Expectations: Before beginning ADHD coaching, clarify with your coach what is important for your child to progress, whether improving academic performance, building organizational skills, or enhancing self-confidence. Sometimes, as a parent, it is easy to want more for your child, but that’s not always realistic because the child may not be ready to progress the way a parent wants. Discuss these goals with the coach to align expectations and understand realistic and unrealistic goals.

  3. Collaboration with the Coach: Be prepared to collaborate with the ADHD coach to support your child's progress. Regular communication and feedback can contribute to the effectiveness of the coaching process.

  4. Consistent Routine: Establish a consistent routine for your child that includes coaching sessions, homework assignments, and strategies learned during coaching. Consistency can help reinforce positive habits.

  5. Patience and Understanding: Understand that progress may take time, and setbacks can occur. Patience and a supportive attitude can help your child navigate challenges more effectively versus expecting or pressuring them to progress at a faster pace.

  6. Feedback and Adjustments: Provide feedback to the coach regarding your child's progress and be open to adjustments in the coaching approach if needed. Regularly reviewing and adapting strategies can optimize the coaching experience.

In addition, I employ techniques that align with the International Coaching Federation’s Core Competencies and Code of Ethics.

I use neuroscience and evidence-based cognitive techniques like neuroplasticity, growth mindset, metacognition, mindfulness, etc., to support and create a structure for your ADHD or EF needs. Instead of “fixing” your ADHD, together, we focus on “building” you through your personal strengths.

Not only do the strategies I share help you understand your brain from a science perspective, but they also, over time, improve your executive functioning skills as you learn how to best work under stressful environments.

What you will encounter in my coaching sessions is that I will engage with you one-on-one and spend time listening to your struggles, holding space to understand and empathize with you, and asking powerful open-ended questions to evoke awareness to help you see the “good” within yourself.

I teach my clients that by practising and employing a strengths-based approach in your life, you will no longer fit into the negative narratives or the limitations set by others or yourself.

Breaking past those limiting beliefs is the foundation of our coaching process.

In the first phase, we begin with a no-obligation consultation meeting to discuss whether coaching fits you. Bring any questions you have to our meeting for further clarity.

The second phase of coaching is we schedule the Intake Session — a comprehensive list of assessments that outline your goals, challenges, strengths, areas of improvement, and recommendations.

Third, we start our weekly one-on-one online coaching sessions, where we align your long-term goals with small achievable steps toward progress.

The final step is your commitment to taking action in between our sessions. This step is critical as it moves you toward the desired outcome.
